With a curriculum based on learning through play, social interaction and inclusion, the playschool prepares children for school readiness as well as introducing a range of play experiences.
The playschool is open for morning and afternoon sessions with a maximum of 18 children per session. Morning sessions are suitable for the child who is preparing for primary school the following year, whilst afternoon sessions are suitable for the younger child in their first year of the ECCE scheme.
Children
Each session has a maximum of 18 Children and they are encouraged to learn through fun and play in a safe and supportive environment. This provides them with an opportunity to develop their social, emotional, physical, linguistic and intellectual skills through open and structured play. All toys and equipment are age-appropriate.
Staff
Currently there is six Play-School staff; 3 Assistants, 2 Room Leaders and a Playschool Manager. All are fully qualified Childcare Professionals dedicated to working with children and their families, and are a part of the community of Clifden and Connemara.
Clifden Community Play-School was established in 1980 to provide children and their families living in the community with a professional, accessible and affordable pre-school service.
The ethos of the Play-School is to be a community based Play-School.
In 2008, to comply with public funding guidelines the Play-School was incorporated. By complying with these regulations the Play-School is able to offer parents access to government schemes, i.e. ECCE and CCSS.
2018 Budget and earlier budgets further expanded this scheme to allow each child to have 2 free years of Play-School.
Play-School Management Structure
Directors
Clifden Community Play-School Limited is a company limited by Guarantee, no Share Capital with a Tax Exemption as a Charity. The Directors are members of the Play-School community and are responsible for the Financial Security of the Company.
Members
Play-School membership comprises parents / guardians, interested individuals and staff. All are encouraged to sign up and become active members of the company, each member guarantees the company for the sum of €1.
Funding
The Playschool receives Government funding; this is the ECCE scheme, which provides parents with free play-school places for children from the ages of 3-5, giving all children the opportunity of play-school for five days per week for two years.
These payments are received through POBAL and payments are made based on attendance, i.e., if a child misses a day or a week or has a delayed start to a term, the school’s payments are reduced.
This then means that our income is affected and our financial projections and monthly cash flow targets are difficult to reach. Historically, we find that our income is down by 10% and we have a shortfall of €9,000-€10,000 per annum.
The HSE / POBAL / Tusla / regulates the number of children that the Play-School can care for during any one session, this number is a group no larger than 18.
This limits the maximum income to the Play-School to cover all expenditure.
The Play-School has a tight financial management system. However, despite this we cannot sustain all costs without asking Parents with children in the ECCE Scheme for a Donation.
