Guidelines for Parents - Toilet Policy
At Clifden Community Playschool we understand that some children get the hang of toilet training at different times than others and that small children are still learning to manage their own needs. During our play sessions we regularly ask the children if they need to use the toilet and a staff member will accompany children to the bathroom area as the need arises. Children are encouraged to manage their own clothing and wiping needs when they visit the toilet and to wash their hands afterwards.
Whilst many children may be fully toilet trained before starting playschool, accidents do and will happen occasionally. We ask that a change of clothes, including underwear is provided for your child. This should be placed in a bag and hung up in the toilet area. Should your child require a change of clothes, a staff member will assist them to change and will bag up their wet clothes for collection at the end of the session.
Child toilet seats and step stools are available for use in our toilet area.
If you are concerned about your child's ability to use the toilet or if your child requires assistance then please speak with our Playschool manager for further information about supporting your child's needs at playschool.

What you can do to help
- Dress your child in clothes that they can easily pull down themselves. Elasticated waist trousers/jogging bottoms or leggings for example.
- Ensure your child knows how to wash their hands and that they should wash their hands after every toilet visit.
- Practice managing clothing and wiping at home.
- Regularly ask your child if they need to use the toilet.
- Have patience and understanding with your child. As with all new skills, toilet training can take time to master.
- Seek advice from your GP/Public Health nurse if you feel that your child may have a physical issue or if you need further advice.
